223. Dr. Fate was able to translate the glyphs, which revealed a mystic ceremony

224. the ancients had used to cleanse the scarab of Reach control.

225. That's why my scarab was off-mode when I found it.

226. I had been cleansed upon landing on Earth 4,000 years ago.

227. Because the ritual used magic of human origin,

228. Fate, a lord of order, could not perform it.

229. So he prepped me instead.

230. Meanwhile, Batgirl and I got with the hacking.

231. Starting with the computer files of the previous Blue Beetle, the late Ted Kord.

232. Ted's files revealed that an archaeologist named Dan Garrett

233. first discovered both the temple and the scarab in 1939.

234. It fused with him the way it fused with you,

235. but Dan assumed it was some kind of mystic artifact,

236. and he used it to become the first Blue Beetle of modern times.

237. When Dan passed away, he left the scarab to his protege, Ted Kord.

238. But Kord quickly realized the scarab was alien technology.

239. Since he wasn't about to let an alien device fuse to his spine,

240. he locked the scarab away.

241. But Garrett still inspired Ted to become the second Blue Beetle,

242. even with no superpowers.

243. Ah, I hear those are optional.

244. Anyway, Ted suspected the Light wanted the scarab back in play.

245. He tried to stop them from stealing it, and paid the ultimate price.

246. That's where you came in.

247. Guess I wasn't exactly what the Light or Reach had in mind.

248. But why keep all this from me?

249. Because it took months for me to learn the ritual.

250. And not to mention, configure the ancient Bialyian incantations

251. to work in concert with my magic.

252. And you couldn't risk letting the Reach know

253. the temple existed until you were ready.
